The future is federated.

The fediverse is a new network of interconnected social platforms.

The Fediverse (commonly shortened to Fedi) is a collection of social networking services that can communicate with each other (formally known as federation) using a common protocol. Users of different websites can send and receive status updates, multimedia files, and other data across the network. The term Fediverse is a portmanteau of federation and universe.

The majority of Fediverse platforms are based on free and open-source software, and create connections between servers using the ActivityPub protocol. Some software still supports older federation protocols as well, such as OStatus, and Diaspora, and Zot. The Nomad protocol, which is the successor to the Zot protocol, continues to be developed and has many features currently unavailable in ActivityPub or not widely supported by platforms using ActivityPub. Diaspora* is the only actively developed software project classified under the original definition of Fediverse that does not support ActivityPub.

Although most of the fediverse is powered by independent open source projects, bigger players have started to take notice. Meta has created a new platform called Threads, where users can opt into connecting to the fediverse via ActivityPub. WordPress has created an official plugin that supports ActivityPub, allowing people to follow blogs. Flipboard has added ActivityPub support, and Tumblr plans on adding ActivityPub support shortly.

In addition to all of these platforms supporting ActivityPub and other fediverse protocols, Bridgy Fed allows you to bridge your fediverse account with Bluesky, connecting you to their network.

A lot of activity means the growth of the network. Millions of people are already connected, and more are coming.
